Quilt Guild Raffle Quilts

I attended the guild meeting last night and was able to view three amazing quilts produced by members and satelite groups of our guild.  They are spectacularly done.  These will go to lucky ticket holders near the end of May when our show takes place.  The workmanship is truly awesome.


This is the first place quilt, created with blocks from the pattern Hop To It, designed by Edyta Sitar.


The following are close up shots of some of the individual blocks.

And finally, the third place ticket holder will win this quilt.

Hmmm, I wonder how many tickets I will sell, and how many I will sell to myself.

What a Difference a Wall Makes

I thought I preferred the layout with the brown in the blocks all arranged diagonally in one direction, but after viewing the blocks on the wall, I really like the blocks arranged with the brown alternating.  This creates a circle effect.  I also like how the brown sashing squares create a nine patch look with four yellow squares and four orange squares. 

This is what I will go with.  Now on to sewing.

Block Layout Preview

The blocks are complete and they went together well.  A few of the star points are a little closer to the edge than a quarter of an inch.  I will need to be watchful when I sew the sashing strips on.  I ironed the last seams away from the center, which has made the intersection of the points visible.  That will really help.  After all this work, I really do not want to cut off those nice sharp points.

A second possible setting.

It is nice to view possibilities as a photograph.  It seems easier to view it objectively and critically.  I think I like this second setting better, yet I had planned initially on doing the first.  I am not yet sure what colour I will use in the middle of the gold and orange squares to join the sashing strips.  Hmmmm!  More auditioning needed.

Vertical Seams

This was a lot of chain piecing.  I ended up with quite a long chain to control.  I made an accordian pile of pieced sections that unfolded neatly off my lap as I completed the last vertical strip.  Yeah, no tangles.


I clipped the threads between each block.



Here is the stack before ironing the seams.





One block down, fifteen more to go.



Seams have all been pressed away from the star points.


Next comes the horizontal rows.  It looks like the seams should lock together nicely.  Then on to the sashing strips.

I Didnt Even See it Coming

I made good headway creating 4 more blocks.  It seemed to be going quite quickly.

Ooops!  Time for the seam ripper.

I was mindlessly sewing, just concentrating on keeping the fabrics organized.  It was just a couple of days ago that I had completed the first set of blocks.  How soon I forgot.  Here I am carefully matching the fabrics, when they needed to be mismatched.  Ahhhh.  I was a little worried about the bias edges but everything seemed to sqare up again when I redid them.  Thank goodness.

These 4 patches went together much more smoothly.  No seam ripping required this time.
